Input Process and Ground Rules

The primary focus of this public process is to gather input from Leadville citizens who represent the breadth and diversity of interests characterizing the community on future changes pertaining to Stray Horse Gulch, Operable Unit # 6. The process is designed to facilitate public input in a variety of respectful and safe ways.

In December 2009, the public will be invited to provide suggestions to EPA and CDPHE on possible mitigation measures and on the various approaches demonstrated in the pilot capping study pertaining to Operable Unit # 6 in the California Gulch Superfund site. In January 2010, input will focus on refining and prioritizing this list of ideas by the end of January 2010. EPA and CDPHE will consider all of the input as they finalize the Proposed Plan for OU6. Additional information about the timeline and purpose of the proposed plan is available here.

The address for the Virtual Forum and key postings will be noticed in the Herald Democrat. Other ways for the public to provide input will include some combination of local input sessions, e-mail, flat mail, and comment drop boxes.  We will post additional details about the locations for the input sessions and drop boxes as they are identified. Community members are always welcome to contact Sarah Walen, the facilitator for the process, at any time via e-mail at skwalen@merid.org or by phone at 1 970 513 8340.

EPA and CDPHE are seeking constructive comments and implementable suggestions.  Citizens providing input are asked to do so respectfully.  The input will not be attributed.  No personal attacks will be published. Please refer to the input ground rules for additional details here.

Other Input Opportunities

The public will be informed about future input opportunities via a combination of notices in the Herald Democrat, posters and fliers, and e-mails to interested parties in the Meridian contact base (please provide us with your e-mail if you wish to be on this list).

EPA and CDPHE will also periodically schedule public meetings, site visits, and other opportunities for public education and input on selected topics related to OU6. The Agencies will also continue to talk with and meet others individually as needed.

Question & Answers

We have done our best to compile a list of questions posed by citizens about Stray Horse Gulch/OU6 between September 2009 and March 2010. Questions resulted from the surveys, this website, and from various public and individual meetings. A summary of the questions and responses is available here. Questions pertaining to possible remedies for OU6 will be answered when the Proposed ROD Amendment is final, which EPA anticipates will be in May. The list will be updated periodically as additional questions are received. Please submit any questions you have for Meridian, EPA, and/or CDPHE to leadville@merid.org. Make sure you include a way to contact you for follow-up.
