Agriculture and Food Systems

Global population is expected to rise from about 6.8 billion today to more than 9 billion by 2050. Growing enough food to feed 9 billion people—and doing so in an ecologically sustainable manner—promises to be a monumental challenge.   

Meridian Institute’s professionals have convened and managed numerous collaborative projects related to agriculture and food security both within the United States as well as internationally. Throughout the process, we have developed specialized expertise and built relationships with key experts on all sides of these issues.  

A number of our projects address food security in Africa, where political, economic, social, health, technological, and environmental challenges threaten human survival on a daily basis. Other projects are of a global nature, addressing issues such as the protection of and access to plant genetic resources, the role of emerging technologies (including biotechnology and nanotechnology) in promoting sustainable agriculture, the environmental impacts of agriculture, the effect of biofuels on food security, and the linkages between agriculture and climate change. In these projects we have worked with local farmers as well as leaders at international agricultural research institutions, universities, government agencies, biotechnology firms, agribusiness companies, environmental organizations, international aid organizations, and private foundations.   

In addition to collaborative problem-solving processes that bring together these types of stakeholders, we offer a free electronic news service—AGree Newsfeed—that have consistently covered the most important national and global developments related to agriculture, food systems, security, and agricultural biotechnology since 2011.

In short, our agriculture and food security projects strive to connect the right people with apt information, and to combine cutting-edge thinking about science, policy, law, and governance with the interests of farmers, consumers, and citizens. Through accomplishing these goals we seek to ensure a sustainable food supply now and for decades to come.
