World Business Council for Sustainable Development Ecosystem Services Review Pilot Project

Related: Environment and Natural Resources

Meridian partnered with the World Resources Institute to provide strategic and process advice to members of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) regarding the creation of a corporate Ecosystem Services Review (ESR).

An ESR is an analytical approach that enables a company to systematically evaluate its dependence and impact on ecosystem services (i.e., the benefits obtained from ecosystems, such as timber, fiber, fresh water, pollination, etc.), understand its contribution and exposure to ecosystem service degradation, and identify the resulting business risks and opportunities. ESR methodology can be extended to include major suppliers and customers. The development and application of an ESR was a primary recommendation outlined for businesses in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment’s Business and Industry Synthesis Report.

To help develop the ESR, Meridian and WRI worked with five WBCSD member companies representing different sectors to pilot test and refine the methodology. The final ESR was launched in 2008, and since then an estimated 300 corporations have used it. More information is available online.
