Meridian Institute supported a team of independent authors who developed a paper titled REDD+ Safeguards: Practical Considerations for Developing a Summary of Information. The paper provides a practical set of elements for countries to consider when developing their summary of information on safeguards for submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). REDD+ refers to Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, including the conservation and sustainable management of forests as well as the enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

The author team solicited input on the paper's content and framing through various efforts and consultations with experts on REDD+ Safeguards, including from forest and donor countries. The paper development was funded by the Government of Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative, but it was not in support of, or reflecting Norwegian Government positions. It was the sole work of the authors.

The final paper is available at the external project site in English, French, and Spanish. The paper was launched and discussed at an event on the margins of the 20th annual Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC in Lima, Peru (COP-20) on 3 December 2014.
