In December 2016, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Planning Body (Mid-Atlantic RPB) released the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ocean Action Plan. This was a historic milestone in a nearly 5 year collaborative planning process that included federal agencies, state, tribes, and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, with input from diverse partners, stakeholders, and the general public in the region. The Mid-Atlantic RPB was formed to carry out regional ocean planning for the waters from New York to Virginia. Members of the Mid-Atlantic RPB include federal, tribal, state, and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council representatives; its leadership is shared among federal, tribal, and state co-leads. The Mid-Atlantic RPB is currently implementing the plan, moving ahead with actions that foster sustainable ocean uses and promote ecosystem health in the Mid-Atlantic.

From 2013 to 2017, Meridian Institute provided process design, facilitation, and meeting planning services to the Mid-Atlantic RPB. Meridian also took an active role in drafting and developing the plan. The overarching aim of regional ocean planning, is to improve coordination and integration across the various authorities managing our oceans, boost transparency and public engagement, foster decision making based on sound science, and carefully consider current and anticipated uses of oceans and coasts.
