Meridian Institute

Government of Norway Strategic Support

Related: Climate Change, Environment and Natural Resources

Meridian Institute provides strategic support to the Government of Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) to help in the implementation of their climate change and REDD+ agenda. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is an effort to create a financial value for the carbon stored in forests, offering incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from forested lands and invest in low-carbon paths to sustainable development. REDD+ goes beyond deforestation and forest degradation to include the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
In 2011, Meridian Institute assembled a team of high-caliber international organizations and experts conducting groundbreaking economic, scientific, and policy-related analytical work for the Government of Norway. Meridian continues to work with this team to apply problem-solving approaches on a broad range of issues related to REDD+, climate smart agriculture, and sustainable land use.
In service to NICFI, Meridian provides strategic consultations and advice; facilitates dialogues and partnerships with other governments and stakeholders; and coordinates teams that conduct technical and policy analyses. In addition to the focus on REDD+, Meridian also supports NICFI’s work on green growth and sustainable development; climate smart landscapes; sustainable land use; and forest-friendly supply chains. Meridian offers guidance and assistance to NICFI in their endeavors relating to the international-level negotiations occurring under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
