Committee to Advise on Reassessment and Transition

Related: Agriculture and Food Systems, Environment and Natural Resources, Health

In 1998, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Agriculture convened the Committee to Advise on Reassessment and Transition (CARAT), a Federal Advisory Committee that built upon the progress made by the Tolerance Reassessment Advisory Committee (TRAC). Meridian facilitated CARAT and TRAC, both of which provided advice to the agencies on strategic approaches for issues associated with implementing the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) of 1996.
CARAT members included representatives from the pesticide industry, food processors, farm worker representatives, environmental and consumer groups, state agencies, and academics. These participants provided advice to promote sound science and transparency in the scientific risk assessments necessary to promote the FQPA. In addition, CARAT made recommendations for guiding the transition to “safer” pesticides and pest management strategies.
