Meridian Celebrates Historic .Eco Domain Launch

Tuesday, April 25, 2017

On April 25, 2017, Meridian celebrated the launch of the “.eco” domain, the outcome of nine years of stakeholder negotiations to establish a standardized internet domain name for the environmental community. Beginning in 2009, Meridian partnered with Big Room Inc., providing facilitation and strategic support to the robust consultation process required by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to establish the .eco domain as a “community priority.”

The consultation process required broad consensus among the environmental community about the rules, rationale, purpose, and policies for the domain name. Meridian facilitated the diverse 13-member stakeholder council which included NGO representatives from around the world and oversaw the process that led to final approval from ICANN. The stakeholder facilitation process cemented transparent and accountable rules for the .eco domain for the benefit the global environmental community.

The .eco domain name establishes a universally recognized emblem of environmental sustainability for global environmental organizations. Currently, more than 50 environmental organizations support the .eco domain including Conservation International and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Congratulations to Big Room on reaching this milestone!
