Joint Ocean Commission Initiative Report Presented at Coastal Zone 2011 Conference

Friday, September 23, 2011

In July 2011, the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative’s Leadership Council co-chair Norm Mineta and member John Podesta presented the Joint Initiative report America’s Ocean Future during a plenary luncheon on the opening day of the Coastal Zone 2011 Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Mineta and Mr. Podesta discussed the importance of effective implementation of the national ocean policy and specific actions recommended in the report.

They also presented Dr. Peter August of the University of Rhode Island with the 2011 Marc J. Hershman Excellence in Mentoring Award. The award recognizes Dr. August for his excellence in teaching and mentoring students in ocean and coastal management and science. The Joint Initiative established the award in memory of Professor Hershman, who was a true leader in the field of ocean and coastal policy and served as a commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative.

At the conference, Mr. Podesta also moderated a panel about the national ocean policy and posed questions to high-level panelists. Panelists included Jane Lubchenco, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Administrator of NOAA; Eileen Sobeck, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, Department of the Interior; Cameron Davis, Senior Advisor to the Administrator for the Great Lakes, Environmental Protection Agency; Terrence “Rock” Salt, Principal Deputy Assistant for the Army Corps of Engineers’ Civil Works Directorate; and Lynne Hale, Director of Global Marine Programs, The Nature Conservancy.
