Nanotechnology Update in Vietnam

This article, by Dr. Lerwen Liu of NanoGlobe Pte Ltd., a nanotechnology consulting company based in Singapore, details advances in Vietnam's nanoscience initiative, which was launched earlier this decade. Dr. Liu says that Vietnam has advanced quickly in building research and development (R&D) capabilities and growing high-tech industries with the help of both domestic and foreign investments. Dr. Liu attended two conferences on nanotechnology, both held in Vietnam in September 2009, and observed the following: Vietnam has built world class nanotechnology R&D facilities at major universities, national research laboratories, and industry parks; the country has a clear focus on nanotechnology applications for clean-tech, particularly in efficient lighting, solar cells, and water treatment; Vietnam has started to pursue nanotechnology for oil and gas applications; and, the country is conducting MEMS R&D at the Ho Chi Minh University Nanotechnology Laboratory. According to Dr. Cattien Nguyen, a senior research scientist at the Ames Research Center in the United States, who spoke at the conference, "Vietnam, and in particular Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are like Shanghai a few years ago, full of excitement and opportunities. The young scientists here are highly motivated and with international exposures, they can easily become international competitive." The article can be found online at the link below.
