France Launches Public Debate on Nanotechnology
Summary posted by Meridian on 10/1/2009 The Commission of Public Debates (CPDP) in France will lead a series of public meetings throughout the country in an effort to involve the public in the debate over nanotechnology. Seventeen public meetings, each organized around a different theme, yet related to the region in which the debate takes place, will be held, with the first occurring in Strasbourg on October 15, 2009, and the last in Paris on February 23, 2010. Jean Bergougnoux, president of the CPDP, says the debates bring the views of the public to those in decision making roles: "[T]his debate must inform the public on the complex problems related to nanotechnology, allow the public to put forward their concerns and expectations, and make decision makers aware of their responsibilities." The debate program is supported by a website where interested parties can learn more about nanotechnology and follow the dialogue of the public meetings. The article, as well as a link to the debate website, can be found online at the link below.
