Govt Orders Recall as Natco Cancer Drug Fails Toxin Test
Summary posted by Meridian on 7/24/2009 The government of India has ordered the Hyderbad, India, based company Natco Pharma, to recall its breast cancer drug Albupax from the market within two weeks. Tests showed that the drug, a nanotechnology-based generic version of a drug by the United States company Abraxis, could cause damage to the liver. A Natco spokesperson confirmed that the company had suspended production of the the drug, but sought to defend it by saying that testing procedures for nanotechnology-based products are complex. A government official said that "Abraxis had collected samples of Albupax and got them tested in several labs in the US. Its complaint to the Indian regulator was based on those studies of the collected samples. Natco Pharma has also been asked to stop production of Albupax till investigations are over." The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) said that Albupax failed endotoxin tests. Drug complications can cause serious problems for breast cancer patients who are also undergoing surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The article can be viewed online at the link below.
