Latin American S&T Investment Shows Major Growth
Summary posted by Meridian on 1/12/2009 A recent report, "State of Science 2008," published in December by the Ibero-American Observatory of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Science and Technology Programme for Development, found that investment in science has soared in Latin America and the Caribbean in recent years. The key expansion period was from 2002-2008. The number of full-time researchers and technicians in the region was almost 235,000 in 2006, an increase of 85 percent since 1997. Nanotechnology research has grown considerably, with the creation of international collaborations and a surge in scientific publications. Brazil remains the nanotechnology leader in the region, followed by Mexico and Argentina. The article states that the global financial crisis and lack of private investment threatens to curb continued science and technology growth. Mario Albornoz, coordinator of the Ibero-American Network of Indicators of Science and Technology, stated that "...the information obtained from indicators allows us to be optimistic. The main deficit in Latin America is the lack of private investment. The only country in the region that has explored paths that seem to be successful to face up to that problem is Brazil. Without private investment, stimulating innovation is an impossible goal." The article can be viewed online at the link below.
