Controlled Drug Delivery System Based on Gold Nanorods that Can Cater for Multiple Drugs
Summary posted by Meridian on 1/5/2009 Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a system to deliver up to three or four drugs and allow the timing of the delivery to be controlled externally. The system uses gold nanoparticles, which melt and release drug payloads attached to their surfaces, when exposed to different infrared wavelengths. Differently shaped gold nanoparticles will release their drug payloads at different wavelengths. In theory, up to four different-shaped particles could be developed, providing more control when battling diseases commonly treated with more than one drug. According to Kimberly Hamad-Schifferli, Assistant Professor of Biological and Mechanical Engineering at MIT, "[W]ith a lot of diseases, especially cancer and AIDS, you get a synergistic effect with more than one drug."
