Nanotechnology Worries Push EU to Seek Full Safety Data for Carbon
Summary posted by Meridian on 6/12/2008 Officials from the European Union (EU) have announced that companies will be required to submit complete health and safety data for carbon and graphite under the EU’s new chemical safety law, called REACH, because of concerns that nanoscale versions of the materials may pose a risk to people. According to the officials, some nanomaterials that are currently being sold bear the same chemical identification numbers as carbon and graphite and would remain exempt from the safety law if carbon and graphite are exempt. Officials also said that they are evaluating whether non-nanoscale forms of carbon and graphite can be re-exempt from the law. One official said, “We will look into the issue of whether it is really possible at all to distinguish between normal carbon and its nanoforms.” The article can be viewed online at the link below.
