Nanotec Researches New Fibres
Summary posted by Meridian on 5/1/2008 Thailand’s National Nanotechnology Centre (Nanotec) is investing US$9.5 million to establish the nation’s first pilot plant to produce a new type of fiber that could be used to develop new products for the local textile industry. The article says that it is anticipated that “the technology will help the local textile sector in building competencies in the upstream industry by producing various kinds of new functional fibres and add to the local textile value chain.” The new fiber combines two different polymers, each with unique functionalities. The fiber could potentially be used to develop textiles for medical, sports, and automotive applications. Nanotec's director Wiwut Tanthapanichakoon said that the pilot plant is intended to provide industry with a venue in which to experiment with the new fiber before initiating mass production. Nanotec has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Taiwan Textile Research Institute to transfer technology related to the development of the new fiber. The article can be viewed online at the link below. The original article may still be available at nationmultimedia.com/2008/05/02/technology/technology_30072045.php As tagged by Meridian Institute:
