SA Launches Two Nanotechnology Innovation Centres
Summary posted by Meridian on 11/27/2007 South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) has launched two nanotechnology innovation centers (NICs) at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the country’s science and technology research organization, as part of a ten-year innovation plan to use “nanotechnology to address social and economic challenges in South Africa, and ensure that the country remains competitive with the international research community” in the field of nanotechnology. Science and Technology Minister Mosibudi Mangena said, “Research conducted at these centres should help develop, for example, low-cost filters to provide clean drinking water, primary health care through the development of medical devices, drugs to detect and treat diseases more effectively, and ensure provision of clean, secure and affordable energy.” The National Centre for Nano-structured Materials will focus on designing and modeling new nano-structured materials for application in solar cells, printed electronic devices, bio-sensors, and others. The Mintek centre, housed at South Africa’s national mineral research organization, will focus on multi-disciplinary research in the areas of health, water, and mining and minerals.
