Researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee, both in the U.S., report study findings that indicate that a form of engineered carbon nanoparticles called single-walled carbon nanohorns have shown no pulmonary toxicity in animal tests. The article says, “These findings are contrary to numerous studies in rats involving single-walled carbon nanotubes that have different shapes and sizes than those of nanohorns.” The article says that, unlike carbon nanotubes, carbon nanohorns can be produced without the use of metal catalysts, which researchers believe may be responsible for inflammatory responses and oxidative stress found in inhalation studies of single-walled carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanohorns may have applications in drug delivery, hydrogen storage, and fuel cells. The article can be viewed online at the link below.
