National Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning Workshop

Related: Environment and Natural Resources

In July 2010, President Obama signed an Executive Order that established the National Policy for the Stewardship of the Ocean, Our Coasts, and the Great Lakes and created an interagency National Ocean Council to oversee its implementation. The policy calls for, among other things, regional efforts on coastal and marine spatial planning (CMSP).

As a first step in implementing the Executive Order, the National Ocean Council convened a Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning National Workshop. This workshop, held in June 2011, engaged federal, state, and tribal representatives and the public in developing a shared understanding of the CMSP process, testing the planning process through a simulation exercise, and determining appropriate collaborative steps going forward.

Meridian Institute facilitated the workshop through a contract with the US Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution.
