The Joint Ocean Commission Initiative is a bipartisan, collaborative group of senior ocean leaders dedicated to meaningful ocean policy reform at the local, regional, state, and national levels. It was formed in 2005 when members of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Pew Oceans Commission came together to advance policies that support healthy ocean ecosystems and a healthy economy. The Joint Initiative is chaired by former Secretary of Commerce and Transportation Norman Mineta, and former Governor of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman.

Meridian Institute serves as secretariat for the Joint Initiative, and in that role provides both substantive and process expertise and support.

The Joint Initiative recently released an interactive digital report, the Ocean Action Agenda, which recommends dozens of actions that the Trump Administration and Congress should take to improve management of America’s ocean and coastal resources. Taking these actions will allow present and future generations of Americans to benefit from the jobs, food, health, recreation, and overall well-being America’s oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes provide. The report also highlights more than 30 insightful stories from the people and places that make up our nation’s coastal communities.

The Ocean Action Agenda was compiled using input from hundreds of leaders during roundtable meetings convened by the Joint Initiative. Participants included industry, military, nonprofit, and tribal leaders, as well as government officials at the local, state, and federal level. These leaders served as representatives for America’s Arctic, East, West and Gulf coasts, citing the dramatic changes occurring in their respective regions. Across the board, they emphasized the need for robust and coordinated federal involvement to support regional priorities.

The Joint Initiative is currently using the Ocean Action Agenda to facilitate conversations and define actions regarding America’s ocean and coastal priorities with Administration officials, members of Congress, and state, tribal, and local leaders.
