Building Resilience to a Changing Climate: A Technical Training in Water Sector Utility Decision Support

Related: Climate Change, Resilience

Meridian is collaborating with the Water Utility Climate Alliance, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Creating Resilient Water Utilities Initiative, and other partners to develop and deliver this technical training for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater utility personnel and consultants. Guided by a dynamic agenda and expert trainers, participants gained useful knowledge and practical skills for integrating climate science into all aspects of water sector utility capital planning and business processes, as well as communication skills for gaining buy-in from other utility staff to implement new planning methods that account for the deep uncertainty associated with future climate change. The training focuses on three important dimensions of building climate resilience among water sector utilities: (1) the fundamentals of climate science, including sources of uncertainty to consider in long-term planning; (2) robust planning and decision-making methods that enable adaptive management in the face of uncertainty about future climate change; and (3) communications best practices aimed at gaining buy-in for building climate resilience. To date, Meridian has facilitated trainings in Boulder, CO (September 2017) and Los Angeles, CA (August 2018). The next offering is slated for November 2018 in Portland, OR.
