In this opinion piece, Chris Tan, the director of the Malaysia Electric & Electronic National Key Economic Area in Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU), writes that nanotechnology is a sector that Malaysia should look at very closely. “Nanotechnology,” he says, “is a natural evolution of existing technology but provides revolutionary solutions to many, if not all, technological, economical, environmental and societal challenges in the world. Therefore the potential impact on Malaysia’s core industries (E&E, Automotive, O&G, Medical etc) is immense, if nanotechnologies are properly harnessed.” Nanotechnology, Tan adds, is forcing Malaysia to confront a conundrum all emerging countries face: “Should we stick with what we know best?” While there is certainly a case for not jumping on the nanotech bandwagon, Tan argues that Malaysia has a solid strategic position if they enter the race and make it their own. The government has already formed the Nanomalaysia Berhad (NMB), an agency under the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, providing the country with a golden opportunity to proactively drive the development of a new industry correctly. And, he adds, Malaysia has its own raw material, creating the conditions for a perfect storm. But, Tan cautions, “The conditions that led to this perfect storm may dissipate as quickly as they emerged. The policy makers and technocrats of this country need to wake up, smell the coffee, and clear the way for nanotech ecosystem to grow – because the nanotech opportunity is knocking. And such an opportunity doesn’t knock twice.”
