Scientists from the Weizmann Institute, Israel, have developed a simple vaccine that could prevent the onset of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease. The vaccine, based on nanotechnology, halts the process of the diseases without causing severe side effects. The treatment has proved successful in animal studies, and it is hoped that the discovery could lead to new ways of tackling many conditions, including cancer. Irit Sagi, the lead researcher, said, “We are excited not only by the potential of this method to treat Crohn's, but by the potential of using this approach to explore novel treatments for many other diseases.” The technology transfer arm of the Weizmann Institute has already applied for patents on the vaccine. Further testing will be needed to ensure that the therapy is safe for humans.
